ESCAPISM

Cheddar and Brean

A mixed surface ride from Cheddar to Brean, back over the Mendips and descending down through the gorge.

"The sea is peace, calm, effervescent, invigorating."

Leaving Cheddar the route heads south on the road to Wedmore and then turns west onto the Somerset Levels on a mix of gravel and choppy hard packed mud and grass farm tracks.

Back on the road it tracks the River Brue round Burnham-on-Sea where it joins the beach. Look for the darker damp packed sand! A full 9km of beach takes you up to Brean Down with panoramic views of the Severn Estuary.

The route then heads back inland to the Mendips, first over Wavering Down (with an option of a hike up to Crook Peak). After a short section of the Strawberry Line it heads up Black Down from Churchill with further 360 degree views of Somerset.

To end you descend down through Cheddar Gorge.
